WordPress themes for free

WordPress themes are great, especially when they are free.  Part of the initial excitement and fun of setting up a new blog with wordpress is the choice of that ideal theme to apply to your blog and reflect the personality of your chosen subject matter whether its funny, personal, corporate, executive, social or 1 million other styles and designs.

With that in mind I have sourced a small selection of resources containing WordPress Themes for Free:

WordPress Theme Central

Revolution Two

Smashing Magazine 2007

Smashing Magazine 2008

Massive Press

If you cant find a theme in this list then you are in trouble!

WordPress Youtube

Everybody loves youtube don´t they? Adding a Youtube video to WordPress could not be easier and makes for a valuable way of communication information in a much more capivating and interesting format than paragraphs and paragraphs of text and a smattering of images, but of course it all depends on the quality of the video to begin with.

I have used quite a few videos embedded in my posts from Yoube throughout my blog, but for the beginner I thought I would fill you in, step by step, on how to add a YouTube video to a post or page.

Before that though you should be aware of what Youtube can offer in advance.

Visit www.youtube.com. Now before you go any further check which region of youtube.com you are looking at. Dead easy. At the top of the page, slightly to the right of the logo are two words, in this case:

Worldwide (All) | English

Heres a quick pic to show you what I mean.

Wordpress Youtube

Selecting the word Worldwide will allow you to choose the regional version of youtube as each country has a different results criteria when searches are done, but even if you changed the video to Spain for example, all the instructions will remain in English unless, yep you guessed it, you click on the word English and choose a different language.

The next thing to realise is the code and customisation videos available to you with youtube itself. Search for a video you want, something like: Web Design

and I choose this as the result: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAMjjTFXz5Y

(This video is actually pretty informative so I have added it in this post as well).

Now on the right hand side of the screen about half way down you will see a grey box with relevant information about the video, the author and post date etc. The part we are interested in firstly is this little sun/flower button beside the “embed” bar, highlighted here.

Wordpress Youtube

Clicking this will present you with a range of editing options for the viewer that allow you to change the border colour of the video.

Wordpress Youtube

Its a pretty simple interface and dosent allow for alot of control but we like simple as its … well its simple isn’t it. Make your selection and click the close button.

Now just copy and paste the full line (make sure you have the full line!) of code in the embed bar:

Wordpress Youtube

And now we can add the Youtube video to your WordPress blog.

Adding a youtube.com video the simple way.

Open your post.

In the WordPress text editor choose the tab on the right side of the window here:

Wordpress Youtube

Now just paste the line of code intothe window and go back to “VISUAL” mode. TA DA! A new youtube video has been added to your post or page. Dont worry if its not playing though, it will initially look something like this until you publish the page or post:

Wordpress Youtube

And heres the video embedded:

Now say for example you wanted to make the dimensions of the video change? Pretty simple stuff. Select the HTML tab again and locate the code you copied from Youtube.com. It will look something like this.

<object classid=”clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000″ width=”425″ height=”344″ codebase=”http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/
cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0″><param name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true” /><param name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always” /><param name=”src” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/NAMjjTFXz5Y&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1″ /><embed type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” width=”425″ height=”344″ src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/NAMjjTFXz5Y&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1″ allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true”></embed></object>

Now all this information may seem to be a drunk man’s idea of a love letter, but most of it isn’t relevant to me or you at all and SHOULD NOT BE CHANGED. The only bit you may want to edit is highlighted in red text above so you can mess around with the video dimensions to make it “fit” into your blog writing area.

This is the simplest method of adding a youtube video to a blog by the way but its not necessarily ideal. There are various plugins available for wordpress that you can upload and install (if you don’t know to add a plugin check this post: How to install a Plugin for WordPress for a full step by step guide). These Youtube plugins offer a much greater scope of options and functions than the brutally simple method discribed above and the point is to check them out and have fun with the options.

Here are a few of the most popular Youtube WordPress plugins to get you started.

- Smart Youtube
- TubePress
- WordPress Youtube
- WP Plugin: Genki YouTube Comments

A quick Google search for something like “youtube wordpress plugins” or such will bring back more results.

Hope you find this all usefull!

How to install a plugin for WordPress

The process of adding a plugin to WordPress, although it is actually simple can be a little daunting at first.

With this in mind I have prepared a though step by step guide to adding your plugin to WordPress, installing it and activating it on your blog.

Before you install the plugins you have to ensure that you have an FTP program to add the plugin to your blog.

I recommend LEECH FTP which is available here:

http://www.download.com/Leech-FTP/3000-2160_4-10122207.html

PART 1

Download and install Leech FTP onto your computer.

Once installed, open Leech FTP and choose the option “BOOKMARKS” under FILE / BOOKMARKS
It is represented along the top toolbar by the book icon as well.

A small window opens showing the current bookmarks, at this stage it will probably be empty.
Select EDIT and choose “ADD BOOKMARK”

Another window opens which will require the FTP details you have been supplied by your Host.
These should be in the format of:

HOST URL : (usually www.yourwebsiteaddress.com)

USERNAME : (Add your suplied username here)

PASSWORD : (Add your supplied password here)

There are no other details required in order to access your BLog via FTP and we will have set the FTP to ensure that you go straight into the BLOG section of your site.

CLICK OK

You should now see an icon of a small computer tower in the bookmarks window with the URL of your site as the name.

Double click this icon to access the BLOG via FTP.

Leech FTP is divided into 4 sections.

How to install a plugin for Wordpress

Leech FTP Software

The top section contains all the data and information telling you what is going on.

Under this are three columns.

The LEFT column will contain the QUEUE – THREADS – DOWNLOADS – FAILURES

Again this column is for information on your uploads to the blog.

The Middle column represents your computer and it is here that you must find your plugin folder.

The Right column shows the BLOG on your website and it should list three folders called:

WP-ADMIN
WP-CONTENTS
WP-INCLUDES

The only folder you need is the WP-CONTENTS folder, so double click this and it will enter the folder and display 3 more folders called:

PLUGINS
THEMES
UPLOADS

Double click the PLUGINS folder to enter it.

Now we just have to add the plugin.

PART 2

Firstly find the plugin you want.

The typical place to find a plguin is the official WordPress plugin page:

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/

Create a folder on your computer (somewhere convenient that you can find easily) and call it “wordpress plugins”.

Choose and download your plugin to the “wordpress plugins” folder on your computer.

The file will download in a compressed format such as ZIP or RAR.

Right click the downloaded plugin RAR file and select “EXTRACT HERE”

The file will extract a new folder with the same name as the plugin.

Now go back to LEECH FTP and in the MIDDLE COLUMN browse to locate the folder on your computer called “wordpress plugins”.

Select the PLUGIN FOLDER you have just unpacked and drag it over to the right column and into the plugin folder in your blog.

LEECH FTP will then upload the folder to this folder inside your blog.

PART 3

Now simply login to the admin panel of your WORDPRESS BLOG

on the very right side of the admin panel you will see three options:

Settings | Plugins | Users

Select Plugins and you will be presented a list of all the plugins you have uploaded to the blog.

Select the plugin and choose ACTIVATE to turn the plugin on.

After this it will all depend on what the plugin has been designed to do so I highly recommend you review all the instructions supplied with each plugin.

The instructions will detail any necessary adjustments you need to do to make the plugin work as intended as each plugin is different so unfortuantely I cant detail all the requirements here! The instructions are typically kept in a NOTEPAD document called “README.TXT” or some variation of this.

Although the details to do this process seem complicated, as listed above, the process is actually very simple and once you have sucessfully added one plugin the rest will all follow the same process. In reality it takes no more than 5 minutes to download, unpack, upload and activate the plugin itself so have fun, experiment and as always keep an eye on new plugins that may be interest to you by visiting the wordpress site regularly or subscribing to their RSS feed so you get imediate updates on any new plugins as soon as they become available.

The RSS FEED is located here:

Have fun!
