WordPress plugins for Greeting Visitors

I absolutely adore this plugin. Greet Box is exactly what it says it is, a box that greets your visitors.

The beauty of this plugin though is that it can see where your visitor has come from and presents them with a greeting related to the site they originated from. For example, if a visitor has come from Twitter, the icon displayed in the box will be the twitter icon and the message will read:

“Hello fellow Twitter user! Don’t forget to Twit this post if you like it, or follow me on Twitter if you find me interesting.”

The great thing about this is it adds a little magic to the greeting by recognising where the visitor came from but also, because the messages are fully customisable you can change the greeting to suit your site and make the whole thing a lot more personal, allowing the visitor to feel just that little bit more special.

Greet Box Placement in Posts

One bit of advice I would give here is regarding the placement of the Greet Box.  Many people will be inclined to place the greeting at the top of the post due to the format of the message it contains but I would suggest that you use the options to have the box appear at the end of the post allowing the visitor to read your information and make a decision rather than asking them before they have even begun reading.

I think it is a little obnoxious to ask people to subscribe to your RSS based on the quality of the article before they have had that chance to decide from themselves, but thats only my opinion.

Simple to install and configure, this plugin is a no brainer!

WordPress Tweetmeme plugin

If you have been reading blogs recently you will have spotted on a good majority of them a little speech bubble shaped button wit ha green bar under it which includes the words “tweet this”.

This distinctive green button is essential as it allows visitors to ReTweet your post or information in a single click, with minimal effort to their network on twitter.

As well as this it also serves to offer an idea of how important or popular visitors have deemed your post to be as the count of ReTweets is displayed in the button itself, the higher the number the mor e likely the next visitor will deem it as valuable and ReTweet it accordingly.  Tweetmeme also serves up, on its homepage, a list of the most ReTweeted and popular articles of the day, http://tweetmeme.com/ and this is an excellent method to generate traffic.

Bear in mind though that it only generates traffic and users will ultimately on ReTweet (RT) the information if they deem it as quality, you cannot manipulate this in effect, by automation or other means so the contetn better be good.

Simple to install, it also has a option to add in your own twitter name in the settings section so once someone hits the ReTweet button you will be notified via Twitter, via an @yourname, allowing you to respond to the person who ReTweeted your post appropriately with a thank you, or in some form of engagement, response, commentary or conversation.

WordPress Sociable plugin

Originally developed by Joost de Valk (no I’m not stuttering it is him again!) he passed control of the plguin over to the guys at Blog Play. Quite similar to the Share This plugin in the functionality it aims to meet it is a little more simple to install and displays its options in a very different manner.

With a more “upfront” display manner it is very customisable in managing the order of the icons to display and even the selection of what networks to include all managed by a simple tick box display.

Another customisation you can perform includes changing the images you wish to display for the network icons but this requires so coding and imaging skills.
