Twitter Lists, Linkedin and Retweets on Tweetdeck

I have been waiting for this update to Tweetdeck since the announcement by Twitter of the changes to ReTweets and the development of the Twitter Lists. I wasn’t sure how it would be handled by Tweetdeck as it basically already allowed Groups and it seems like they have done a great job in working out a solution to this possible clash by allowing you to convert your current Tweedeck groups into a twitter list or keeping it private in Tweetdeck itself.

The thing is, and in a surprisingly quiet move, Tweetdeck have also went one step further and integrated LinkedIn status updates to the software, something that the other desktop apps currently neglect or are developing. Quite a shrewd move!

Twitter Lists

Follow, create and manage both public and private Twitter Lists from within TweetDeck. Export your old TweetDeck Groups to Twitter Lists and add new columns to monitor your favourite Lists using a slick new interface.

Add a configurable LinkedIn column to view updates from your network, send status updates & view profiles easily

Retweet

Perform both new-style and traditional retweets with ease. All retweets are now visible in your TweetDeck columns

Geolocation

Instantly locate your Twitter friends by showing an online map for those tweets that have been geo-tagged

And of course the video detailing the new updates and explaining how to set up all your new features.

Well, all these changes may be dramatic and a little confusing at first but it has solidified Tweetdeck for me as the software of choice for managing my accounts and staying up to speed on the latest information and my social networks. Linkedin, the well known and well used social networking site for professionals.

LinkedIn is a business-oriented social networking site founded in December 2002 and launched in May 2003[1] mainly used for professional networking. As of October 2009, it had more than 50 million registered users, spanning more than 200 countries and territories worldwide. But sure, you know all this already of course because your on it.

Linkedin Professional Networking – Overview

Adding Applications to your Linkedin profile

On your linkedin profile there is an easily overlooked option called “Add application”. This feature allows you to install some partner plugins to expand even further upon your profile and offer up another avenue for viewers of your public profile. When your logged into Linkedin, click on your edit profile option and just below your summary you shoulkd see this.

As you can see above the it also displays the WordPress application I have installed, linked to this blog so when I post it updates automatically on Linkedin. (Its a little strange seeing the other Linkedin articles I wrote earlier this week displayed there as well…spooky!)

When you select “Add Application” you are offered a range of options to choose from to add to your profile. All of them are pretty self explanatory and when you select one its a matter of clicking a few buttons and adding in some necessary information (such as your blog RSS feed) and its done.

One point to note is that these applications are only viewable by your connections, they do not affect your public profile (at least not as far as I am aware or have managed to achieve) but rather they are only visible to your connections in your Linkedin network.

Its been a long time coming but I haven’t blogged about Linkedin in any detail as yet, or to no great extent so its about time I bought it up.

Social Media – Who takes responsibility in the corporate environment

I have been involved in LinkedIn Groups (if your not on LinkedIn get signed up) for a while now and make a point of contributing where I can when I feel I have something useful to add. Just recently Reginald Bautista asked the question:

Who’s responsible for Social Media Activities? Marketing or PR?

This question has provoked quite a debate among the members of the Pro Marketers – For Marketing Professionals Group with various views and opinions.

Most are of the opinion that it is a duel responsibility between the respective departments, while personally I am of the opinion that a complete “mental overhaul” is required regarding social media and corporations, its practices and application, its inherent value, and the implications of social media in business, separating it completely from the traditional practices by departments of Marketing and PR (but that’s a whole over post for another day).

One person in particular has obviously thought long and hard about what Social Media can bring to the table and has quite rightly pointed out that by trying to focus on it as a Marketing or PR tool is actually a mistake and the bias that exists within companies as they struggle to understand the reach and implications of social media outside of these two areas.

I hope that Dean Guadagni, Business Director for Inner Architect, will not mind me quoting him directly. I feel he has an essential understanding of what social media is, can be and will become when its full application is properly considered;

Social Media functionality is so MUCH more than marketing or public relations. Yet, most corporations limit their belief of the functionality of social media to marketing or public relations.
Savvy companies understand the multiple opportunities within social media. They create leaders for each department, with strategic goals, and the ability to collaborate with their counterparts in each department.
Whether they use a wiki or an internal, password protected, blog the idea is to “crowdsource” your own human capital. Prior to launching that type of effort, guidelines are created so that everyone is on the same page.
Corporations are beginning to understand the multiple business applications of social media:
