Its still a milestone for a lot of people to have many thousands of followers and no idea who these followers are, its a real pity in my book, but I guess people will accept almost anything.

We can but try Susan. My observation is that there are people with 21,545 followers who follow 21,048 people. There's no way to interact. It's about quality... Love the comment about blind reciprocity.

Finally, someone makes sense about the huge numbers of followers some people have accrued! I am @eoink and am cautious of new people I follow as I use twitter to help filter things I should be looking at, reading etc and informing myself. For some power users managing a large body of followers and requests is a good use of their time but surely when you dip into the 000s then it becomes something very different. Having said that I have collaborated with some twitters with a very large follower base to help promote topics and giveaways. Horses for courses I suppose.

Twitter quickly followed the Facebook trend of a popularity contest rather than creating a community around yourself. I'm spending more time doing the latter. People are unfollowing me IN DROVES. They only want a relationship based on blind reciprocity.
I don't kiss people I don't know in dark rooms.
Thanks Justin!

I think when we “get down to brass tacks” or whatever saying you’d prefer, we see a difference between pushing for numbers that make us feel better about ourselves and pushing for contacts that make us better ourselves.

I’m spending more time doing the latter.
