Excellent post, and interesting read. i too get very annoyed with the amount of people with an extreme lack of seo knowledge who claim they can 'master' the search engines and get guaranteed results to make you money. with SE's, especially google, there will never be a guarantee, unless you use adwords of course.

Thanks for the kind comment Webrevole, nice to see a similar outlook.

Indeed there are no guarantees, but people also conveniently forget that adwords is only a guarantee relative to your spend and budget. Hence its guaranteed but only in so much as you have the money to guarantee it!

Hi Justin,

I have over 25 year experience in software (mostly mainframes), and I totally agree. I have been working for 6 months on my sites SEO. A degree of success everywhere apart from google, it's like a yoyo.

There are a lot of scams out there and even more mugs keeping them going.

regards
George

Hi Justin

i do really agreed with you that SEO is not easy, as there is a lot of hard work to make it work and range first page of google is never easy for those general keyword.

Long tail keyword is always the way to go and have higher conversion rate.

Hi Greg, thanks for the comments. I do agree, sticking to the Google Webmaster Guidelines is the best practice and that will see you right but being informed and keeping abreast of new developments but they are only a small part.
That`s the point in a roundabout way I suppose. Anyone can follow the guidelines but only the experts can be aware of any small, intricate and beneficial twist and turn that all helps add up to a more effective website in the SERPs.

Like I mentioned, I can take some medicine or stick a plaster on my finger which is the right thing to do (just like following the Google Webmaster Guidelines) but when it comes to being more effective and figuring out how or what I should be doing about that broken leg or pain in the chest, well I got to go see an expert then to get the right solution. (Thats me incase your wondering :P)

Just because everyone is aware of medicine certainly doesn't mean they should be allowed near the scalpel and the defibrillator!

All depends on how effective you want to be , can be and should be online.

As for the email feed, sure do (or 2 :P)

The people that say its easy are the people who have never done it before and don't understand just how complex SEO actually can be.

I have written an article about whether you should do seo your self or hire an seo to do it for you.

Should I do SEO Myself?

Hey Justin, I have to say I started off reading your post with a lot of interest as I totally agree with you, there is too much hype out there. From make your $500 per week without doing anything to become number 1 on Google in just 30 days and for under $10 :) That sort of stuff!

What I have to say I don't see totally eye to eye with you on is the second part of your article. SEO is as complex as you want to make it. People are constantly trying to be ahead of Google - that makes it complicated. But if you just stick to Google Webmaster Guidelines you are set to go and yes that is pretty easy if you ask me...

But hey thumbs up, interesting blog you have going! Have you got an email feed?
