A day in the life of a Web Designer

Posted by: Justin Parks In: Business on the Web

I got passed this video today from a friend who knows the industry I work in and after watching this they thought of me.

Be warned, it has some pretty heavy language in there but unfortunately I can completely and utterly relate to the sentiment.  For all those web designers out there who know what I mean.

Just Enjoy.

(And to all those “clients” who mirror this sentiment… well , just watch the video)

oh god.  I just found another one.

  • This is classic and unfortunately too true. Clients looking to us to generate them millions of dollars on a student intern's wage. When a client like this approaches me, I know they have no respect for what I do and I slam the door in their face.
  • I think if you work it out its less than a student intern in most cases Chris ! :P

Im the same to be honest, and some times I do feel that clients cannot be blamed all the time but on occasions, and indeed more often than I would like, the situation above does happen and it makes me really sad that they do not take the business as seriously as they should financially but expect ridiculous amounts of work.

Such is the business we are in I guess.
  • Maybe I was a little too harsh in that last sentence. ; )
I do have respect for about 99% of my clients.

What I meant to say is that if a potential client comes to me looking for an overabundance of work at little cost to them and they don't have a certain amount of respect for my skills, then it throws up a red flag immediately.

I have noticed over the years, that if someone is constantly questioning my prices, skills or advice, then they have not taken the time to thoroughly plan ahead of time.

On the flipside, it can also be our own fault for not seeing the forest for the trees and the client ends up clouding our judgement. Sometimes by simply asking a straightforward question or telling a client "No" we are telling them to stop and think. As a result, I have ended up gaining respect from the client for being upfront and honest.
  • Here you go Justin. This top trending topic on Twitter today just about sums it up. It's totally hilarious. http://theoatmeal.com/comics/design_hell
