Hosting

Never get cheap on hosting your website.

Like most things in life, there are a variety of prices and levels of service available and budgets largely dictate what we can and cannot do but when it comes to hosting im totally amazed at what people will pay.. or not pay as the case in point… for a reliable host.

I cant really blame people I suppose when your continually advertised offers for hosting at 20 cents a month or 1 euro a year but what makes me shake my head is when these services go down or a problem occurs and people then start complaining that their website, their online business, their income is being affected.

Getting the picture yet?

Yes its true, you certinaly get what you pay for and what do you expect? Expecially for 1 euro a month?

Aide from “problems” occurring such as the server going down or crashing frequently, alot of people forget the end user experience as well. A cheap service will tend towards being a slow service and users hate slow, especially on the net.

Hang on, not only users hate slow, YOU hate slow as well!

Not many things irritate as much as a page that takes forever to appear, and if your in business that can be the difference between a new customer or a lost sale! Surfing through a slow and sluggish loading site is not a fun experience, its distracting, annoying and ultimately detrimental to all involved.

The point is, cutting costs is all well and good, but loosing sales due to cutting costs when the expensive versions are in reality priceless is just bad business.

Google 10 to the power 100 project

Googles new “help out” idea of 10 to the power of 100 has been released with a submission deadline of October 20th 2008. The basics behind the idea revolove around submitting a “new” idea to help as many people as possible with the theory being that at the end of the day the only thing to do beyond a point of material wealth is help each other out… a noble ideaology indeed and reminds me of that movie “Pay if Forward” with Kevin Spacey.

No point messing about, head over to the site and see if you can help out by submitting a decent idea.

The Google Phone – the Gphone

So rumours have been circulating about a new google devised phone handset and its seems that its now been confirmed as true. Being branded as the “gphone” or indeed “Android” at the moment the there may be a few advancements that Google could bring to the mobile phone market in a technology sense like the last revolution when the iPhone was released.

The operating System running gPhone/Android the phone will be open source allowing developers to begin adding and contributing to the platform pretty much from Day one unlike Apple who I believe made a serious mistake by locking down the development potential of the iPhone both contractually and technically, this could be where this mistake bits them in the ass.

Consequently phone manufacturers will be able to install the Operating System on old phones, new phones fat ones and thin ones giving all and sundry a single platform to develop on unencumbered by the usual regulatory restrictions and rules set by manufacturers. The whole basis of the phone will be using the internet as the driving force for its development rather than as an additional attribute factored into the phone itself, who knows, maybe this is the breaking ground for free internet access.

I cant begin to imagine what’s going to happen with the applications that will appear like wildfire for this system and as usual, all Google related systems and services will be happily and snugly working on it from the word go.

Here is a sneaky shot of the phone courtesy of www.gizmodo.com:
